Is it nice to meet me?
Now that’s a loaded question. It's been a year since I moved to Substack, and I wanted to introduce myself again to new readers and update old friends.
Now that’s a loaded question.
Imagine concluding your next standard introduction to someone that way. You’ve just been introduced to someone new at work, or in a restaurant, or at church, and after the exchange of pleasantries, you normally end with “It was nice to meet you.” That’s conventional.
What if you went one step further and simply asked, “Was it nice to meet me?” The embarrassed perplexity on someone’s face at that moment may just be worth putting yourself out there to ask such a question.
I think of that on occasion when I write a post on my stack/blog. What was your response? When you don’t know me personally, you usually don’t have an emotional investment. Unless my writing moves you, you’re able to read and click along through life.
It’s been a year
I began writing first on Substack in May 2022. After six months, I post here at journeyguy.com, but I have enjoyed the interaction and opportunity to engage with readers and a new online community over at Substack. The verdict is still out whether I’ll stay there permanently, but the opportunity to earn some coffee $ through paid subscriptions there is a definite plus (and encouragement).
In June 2022, I “introduced” myself on Substack with the post Hello, it’s me, Jeff.
Since it’s been a year, and I’ve picked up some new subscribers, I thought I’d ask my subscribers/readers to respond now:
Was it nice to meet me?
Yeah, I know. I just made things awkward.
Here’s a quick life update since last year
Since last summer, I got back on Twitter, 1 became a grandpa 2, and went to Istanbul. Our church’s office building was completed, and we moved in. I finished preaching through the book of Revelation. 3 I became the proud owner of a pressure washer for Father’s Day. 4 I helped my parents move into an independent living facility. 5 I continued running on MWF afternoons. I began an effort to watch through all the Star Trek series. 6
What have you been up to?
Things that still define me
If you’re new to Notes from the Trail, here’s a few key entries that may help you know me and decide if it was nice to meet me:
- Personal ministry vision statement
- My Philosophy of Ministry
- I choose joy
- Our story (an epic tale of boy meets girl)
So, was it nice to meet me?
If you would answer “absofreakinglutely,” then thank you! It was nice to meet you too! Thanks for being a subscriber and following along!
If you would answer “meh,” then… I got nothing. I’m happy being me. Grateful for who I am. I have room to grow and learn. I’m not sorry I asked. I’m ok with folks not liking me. In the meantime, why don’t you try asking someone, “Was it nice meeting me?” You may be surprised by their response.
- Hello, Twitter. I’m baaaack. (December 2, 2022) – That journey was a melancholy one since I also learned that a bot now has my original account of journeyguy (still hoping to get it back). You can follow me there as biblebeltman.[↩]
- Sam and Sidney are expecting a son in November.[↩]
- You can listen to the messages here.[↩]
- It may be the second most satisfying gift for a dude. I’d say the first most satisfying gift was a shop vac that that my dad gave me when I graduated from college. (still have it, and it still sucks – in a good way). A pressure washer is incredible. It’s just hard to know when/where to quit. You’re always thinking of things you can wash with it.[↩]
- For those of you with older parents, we found the people and help of A Place for Mom supportive, friendly and compassionate.[↩]
- Star Trek over Star Wars. I got to the middle of season 5 of Star Trek: Voyager when Amazon Prime removed the series from their free offerings. Recently, we got a free one-year Paramount+ subscription, and I was excited to see ST:V available now, so I’m back at it. One of the episodes even prompted some deeper thinking about God’s sovereignty.[↩]
