After 18 years as nomads, our church family celebrated moving into its first church facility on Easter weekend! It's surreal to have your own "place." Here are a few thoughts from moving in.

Folks, it's been a year. No matter what we've done, the virus has claimed lives. Masks or no masks. Lockdowns or none. It's been humbling and depressing. Many want to blame authorities and see a conspiracy theory or broader narrative behind every motive and EO. It's tempting because they try to weave disparate realities into a metanarrative. But can we just.. not right now? Let's look forward to the coming dance.
Thirst is a good thing. Our need to drink reminds us that we are not self-sufficient. On a spiritual level, do you grasp that your *soul* was also created to thirst? Psalm 42 has some wonderful imagery about how to quench your deepest longings.
Wednesday, January 6, 2021 was an unhappy day for America. Not only were Constitutional processes interrupted and perhaps subverted by fear and unrest, but it was depressing. It seemed that 2021 was simply 2020 on steroids, an infinite Groundhog Day-ish loop of a repetitive cycle of mean-spirited vengeance.
We will all forever remember 2020. It has shaped our days and generation. Its impact will be felt for a long time. One of its strange gifts, for those who take the time to receive it, is its brutal reminder of helpless humanness. Oh, how we've tried to forget our frailty! Thank you, 2020, for reminding us.
Some numbers grow - like in a family due to marriage or engagement. Some numbers shrink - as in our days as they tick by. When we recognize increase and decrease and are thankful for both, we grow in spirit and perspective.
Truth, thinking and three commitments will help us encourage rather than vilify during these continuing hard days of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's past time to allow ourselves to ask our leaders significant questions, but we must do so with respect and a desire to genuinely provide solutions.
2020 doesn't immediately conjure gratitude for most people, but upon second glance, with the eyes of faith, there has been SO MUCH to be thankful for.
