Book Review: “Deeper – Real Change for Real Sinners”
I rarely give books “5 stars.” You can peruse my Goodreads ratings and see that. However, Dane Ortlund has made a significant contribution to the life of faith and pursuit of Jesus in this book.
Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners deserves to be read. It needs to be read. It should be read by anyone limping along in their Christian life, with an inkling of desire to grow, to know, to experience more of God.
He urges us to quit trying, working, performing, behaving and failing to do all these… and to simply… go deeper. With Jesus.
“You’ll never get there until you first try living for Christ out of your own strength and discover just how fearful and cautious and spiritually impotent you are on your own steam.” (p167)
If you are wondering what book may lead you into a “deeper” love and experience of Jesus, start here. Put all other books (except the Bible) aside, and unwrap this short book as you would a stick of Wrigley’s. Pop it in your mouth and begin to chew. I promise the flavor burst of refreshment lasts all the way through to the last page.
Gentle and Lowly by Ortlund was my second favorite book of all time. It was exactly what I needed when I read it. This one is sitting in my queue, and I plan to read it this summer.
